Domain Names

In simple terms, a domain name is the address that you type in the browser’s address bar to goto a specific website; or better still, a domain name is the name you use to find a particular website on the internet. In other words, a domain name identifies a particular website, for example: www.yourbusiness.com.

Technically, when you host your website it can only be seen on the internet by using a corresponding IP address (eg 174.23.56.7). You can imagine how many of these numbers (IP) you need know of hand, in order to visit your favorite websites. This seems daunting right? and am sure you don't want anybody to cram this kind of number before they can see your website. Thus, A domain Name is a text version of an IP Address, the number that points to a particular website. For example, the number 66.220.152.16 is the IP Address for facebook.com. Each domain name on the Internet corresponds to such numbers.

Without domain names, each and every website would have to be recalled by a number like this, similar to the telephone system, but much more difficult to remember. For this reason, domain names were introduced, and have made navigation on the internet much simpler.
